Just an update on this for any potential forum members searching this issue in the future. The car is now fixed and running, I had to replace the high pressure fuel pump (along with new timing belt and tensioner ofcourse) and all 6 injectors. I flushed all the fuel lines in the engine bay including the fuel rails, and replaced the fuel filter.

First thing is battery/power issues, an alternator failure (or low charge rate) will give you lots of errors. If roadside man was expecting fuel to come out of the filter inlet then he would be mistaken as there is no in-tank pump on these, if he then disconnected it that would let air in and stop it from starting
