Every TV sold in the UK has a Freeview or Freeview HD tuner, also know as DVB-T and DVB-T2, which gives you access to dozens of SD and HD channels. What you can access differs depending on the strength of the signal in your area – and some channels may not be available.
My confusion stemmed from the fact that they don't make it explicit anywhere that you can get all the Freeview HD channels, even though you don't get the extra on-demand features from "Freeview Play" — you have to know that having a DVB-T2 tuner is basically synonymous with "Freeview HD".

How to check if the TV has DVB-T2? The easiest way to check if the TV supports the new standard is to look at it specification. It can be found in the user manual, on the box or, if we are just planning to buy a new device, on the website of the store and the manufacturer.
Live channels sees the tuners WinTV-soloHD and WinTV-DualHD, but as of August 17, 2019 (Shield Android TV 8.8.8 (32.5.205.42)) it does not detect any DVB-t and DVB-T2 channels (Europe, Poland) This is expected, Live channels doesn't not support the EU tuner. You'll need to use Plex or something else for now untili Google adds support to Live
